/System/Library/ColorSync/Profiles
/Library/ColorSync/Profiles
~/Library/ColorSync/Profiles
and possibly
/Network/Library/ColorSync/Profiles
and each printer driver can have profiles in the PM bundle
There's five ways to do the same thing.
Touche, sort of. I'd say one way to do it (Finder drag), four possible
locations. There are profiles in the printer drivers but those are
meant to stay there, they're part of the driver. The other four
folders have different ownership permissions and are meant to be used
for different things.
Here is what each of those locations mean.
MacOS X has its roots in Unix, so it's a multiuser environment, with
multiple levels of ownership and permissions. Some things belong to a
certain user, other things belong to everyone, while still other things
belong to the system. "That's confusing!" you say...well maybe, but it
prevents your kids from tossing all your profiles, or from tossing
files needed to boot the machine. So it's a good thing to have
permissions. A series of "domains", basically different folder
locations, is used to group together files with similar permissions.
There are four domains, System, Slash(or Root), Home, and Network.
Each of these contains a Library folder, which can contain a
ColorSync/Profiles folder.
System/Library - referred to as "system library". Files the system
needs to run the machine. You're prevented from accidentally tossing
this stuff because it belongs to a user named "system". Yes there's a
way to modify files here but I'm not telling how because you don't need
to. This level is usable by everyone but modifiable only by the user
"system". The only profiles in here are the space profiles needed by
the system. Don't add profiles here.
/Library - referred to as "slash library". If you want to add things,
add them here. This level is usable by everyone and modifiable by
everyone. This is the best place to install profiles.
Home/Library - referred to as "home library". Only usable and
modifiable by the user. If your username is John, then this folder is
~John, referred to as "tilde John". The ~ is shorthand for the whole
path to your home folder. When you run the Default Calibrator it
creates profiles here.
Network/Library - referred to as "network library". You won't see
anything here unless your machine is connected to a local network of
other computers. Usually these are set up as usable by everyone but
modifiable only by a network admin user.
