Yesterday, I got to work with a group of photographers using Nikon D1s and
use Color Eyes 20/20 and the Adobe Photoshop Camera Raw plugin.
It took hours to get the Color Eyes target lit correctly to create what
looked like a good input profile. OTOH using the Photoshop Camera Raw plugin
was very easy. The conclusion is simple, the Photoshop Camera Raw plug-in
works and saves hours of profiling time so a photographer can get on with
the business of shooting.
I think there are still reasons to profile a digital camera but not as many
now that this plug-in has entered the scene. Has anyone on this list
experienced the difference between custom digital camera profiles and the
Photoshop Camera Raw plug-in and would you share those differences. I am
looking for feedback about quality.
I wouldn't dream of profiling any camera that's supported by
cameraRAW. I've done side-by-side tests with custom profiles/camera
vendor's software and CameraRAW with the Kodak DCS 460 (all the Kodak
cameras are "unofficially" supported -- they work, but Adobe won't
discuss any problems) and the Canon EOS-1Ds, and I got much better
results from CameraRAW.
