Here's a lazy person's shortcut for a process mentioned in the RWCM book -
converting TIFFs into text target or measurement files using ColorLab:
The book says you need to first downsample the TIFFs to 1-pixel-per-color
format, and remove any patch borders (or alternatively build the TIFF by
hand, pixel by pixel, to avoid downsample color-interpolation issues.) But
the easier way is to load the full-size TIFF directly into ColorLab and,
when you Filter->Conversion->Spot Colors you can manually type in the patch
chart dimensions (eg Width 27, Height 10) rather than check the
auto-dimension "Enable". ColorLab will then convert the TIFF to
1-pixel-per-color format of the proper dimensions, and while it's at it -
automatically strip out any patch borders. Then you can save the file out
as either the tiny TIFF or as text-file color values. Very quick, clean and
easy - and no downsample interpolation color-contamination worries.
Another ColorLab step I found helpful, to synchronize the file orientation
created from loading text-file measurement readings - use the
Filter->Others->Mirror to "Flip Horizontal" (or even Swap Rows/Columns.)
One crude workaround for the Lab TIFF load/export bug is to load the TIFF
in, or export it out, in RGB or CMYK - converting to Lab from within
ColorLab using the appropriate defining RGB/CMYK profile in
Filter/ICC/LogoSync. ColorLab doesn't have trouble saving or loading Lab
text measurement files - only Lab TIFFs. (Windows users note: you need to
have a Lab profile in your color folder before you can do a ColorLab
Lab-conversion.) And the "Schwupp" button conveniently swaps source &
destination profiles for converting in the other direction.
