You can calculate colorimetric densities if you have the XYZ
tristimulus values (set the measurement software to get this, or it's
a simple calculation if you just have CIELAB values). The Dg density
is a correlate of visual density. There is an example of the
calculation in the density.xls spreadsheet at
http://www.digitalcolour.org/understanding/Density.htm, but all you
need to do is log(Tn/T) where T is a tristimulus value X, Y or Z and
Tn is the tristimulus value of the reference white (100 for absolute
measurement of density, or the T of the substrate for density above
substrate).
