Because you are using applications that are not ICC savvy so they don't know
anything about the embedded profiles in files nor the profile of your
display. They are just throwing the raw RGB numbers to the screen. The
preview are incorrect and there is nothing you can do about it.

That's correct. That nice little check box turns IE 4.5 and 5.0 on the Mac
only into a smart, ICC savvy application.
