Thanks to all for contributing to a lively discussion on this topic. I've been on the road for the past three days and am about to sally forth again so I won't have time to read all of the replies just yet but I appreciate everyone sharing their opinions and experience on the issue.

My original inclination is so far still intact...that 6500 (or perhaps some level slightly lower than that, like 5800) has been working fine for me so far and I see no reason to change it. I'm just trying to gather information and get a sense of other people's real world working experience so I can have an informed reply when someone raises the holy grail of the carved in stone "standard" of 5000K.
