Mark,
We seem to agree on a lot of things. Obviously, bundled CMS will be
shitty at first, like built-in lightmeters. But at least thuey get you in
the ballpark. When I take a picture of my MacBeth chart with my D1X in
daylight, and display it on my Mac PowerBook G4 (1st generation) I
wouldn't even call some of the colors by the same name, it's that bad. If
a lab gave me anything like that I would insist on a refund !
I agree with what you say about Nikon - but at least some progress is
possible here because the camera could in the future self-calibrate. I
believe Apple too had some vaguely self-calibrating monitors, and some
monitor companies, LaCie, Sony etc are beginning to provide calibration
tools for a small amount of money. So there is still hope. As for me, I
will purchase some decent system -when I can afford it - If you have a
cheap EyeOne for sale, say so :)
