I am happy that Craig brought up this issue since it prompted me to do
some more testing. I am using Win-XP and a Matrox Parhalia video board
and a Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 2070. Being new to color management I
might be doing something wrong but this does not look good:
Issue 1:
It might be obvious to experienced users to disable the calibration in
OptiCal when using PreCal but I would assume (incorrectly) that the
program has sufficient IQ to do that automatically since we are trying
to adjust the monitor itself. PreCal uses the old calibration values
and we run around in a circle, so be sure the calibration is turned off.
Issue 2:
I carefully tweaked the settings in PreCal:
Target: 0.314x 0.324y 85-95 cd/m^2
Measured: 0.314x 0.324y 89.8 cd/m^2
I also made sure the monitor setting display box was off during the
actual measurements. I wish the monitor manufacturers were considerate
and would put it in a corner to make it easy to measure the monitor in
the center.
Since I was finished with PreCal, I clicked on "Calibrate" without
moving the sensor or changing anything and let it go through its steps.
It measured 0.31 and 86.0 cd/m^2
Why is it now measuring 86.0 when in PreCal it measures 89.8 with the
same settings and unmoved sensor?????
I adjusted contrast from 100% to 96.4 and the display now closely
measured matches the target. It read 0.31 & 80.1.
Issue 3:
After clicking "Done" the program created a profile!!
The "File Menu" clearly differentiates between calibrating and
profiling and also has the combined step. If the "Calibrate" button is
really "Calibrate and Profile", it ought to say so.
Issue 3:
The "Information" window now lists the measured data as: 0.27 and 82.5.
Why is it not agreeing with the previous displayed calibration values of
0.31 and 80.1?
Issue 4:
I selected "Print Info" and I got a message saying that no correct
display info was available and that I would have to either validate or
create a profile to be able to print the info. I just did!! The
program failed to know that.
As I said, I might be overlooking something but I smell software
problems here! What is going on??
