-- I don't understand this - are you saying you got an upgrade for
ProfileCity's ICC DCam from BasICColor?
Integrated Color Corporation Integrated Color Solutions
Anybody know if there is any connection between these two beyond their
confusingly similar names?
I have been told ICS (BasICColor) upgrades the ICC Scan & ICC Display
products, but deflects all ICC DCam stuff to ICC (ColorEyes).
Ok, lets clear all this up right now. Integrated Color Solutions creates
Bassiccolor Software and the software behind ColorEyes.
Integrated Color Corp has created the Coloreyes software package from the
original DCAM. Derrick Brown of ICC has been a long time associate of the
people behind Basiccolor, all the way back to the original Colorblind.
ICS had no expertise supporting digital cameras and no documentation beyond
a rudimentary description of how to make a camera profile was ever provided
with Dcam. When tech support question arose we were asked to help. Please
don't feel the need to forward this on to Dan or Franz to make them mad.
These are facts that are clearly agreed to between ICS and ICC.
We, Derrick and I (ICC) strongly suggested to ICS that we take over sales,
marketing and TECH SUPPORT for the camera product. Having worked with Dan
and Franz closely for the last 8-10 years they believe that we can do a
better job with the camera product. We also had ICS make several changes to
Dcam to improve it's performance. In addition we created 2 products, one for
the more frugal among us using only a color checker, and one for the more
critical crowd using a much bigger custom target with a custom reference
file. Finally we took the time to thoroughly document a process for making
profiles that eliminated all the mystery and fumbling around in the dark. I
know there is no other document like it available, because we looked around
a lot. That is of course unless it has been copied by another company by
now.
So why so much more expensive? Manuals, tech support, custom targets and
reference files, marketing, experience. I would think that covers the cost
pretty well.
Now as for buying Dcam in the US you should not and will not be able to do
that. Furthermore any Dcam you buy will come with no instructions, no tech
support, and none of the improvements that we had ICS make to build
ColorEyes.
As for pricing we have always felt that the Dcam price was unrealistically
low. Why? Because a Digital Camera is not, as is so often stated a scanner
on a stick. Lighting, reflections, exposure and software setup are all
critical factors in making a great camera profile. So if a scanner program
costs 100 bucks lets say and requires little or no tech support or
instuctions, what do you do about cameras. You either throw a product out
there with no instructions and limited support, which yields limited
results, or you invest the time and build the support so the product can
really work. That is going to make it cost real money. Now unless I am
mistaken Gretag's product costs ^00 bucks and InCamera is around 450.00 so
we seem to be on both sides of those.
