I use a 7700 as a digital printing press.
As long as I stay within the limitations of the printer,
i.e. smooth stocks and few large solids, I get excellent
results. I even use it for low end art repro ($2.5 - $4).
Repeatabily is good. Bottom line: the 7700 generates
about $3,000 profit every month. If I had a doc 12,
I'd have to give the $1,200 to Xerox (lease + sup) and
be jumping up every half hour or so to make a 1 or 2
print color copy sale as opposed to designing a printed
piece and running a few hundred for say $500.
I do not use this printer for proofing offset jobs. It's
just not accurate enough. I've got an Epson 3000 with
the Epson (Adobe) RIP. Proofing a magazine on this
combo takes forever but the color match is quite good.
I also use Epson 9000 and 9600 printers for signs, displays
and art reproduction. My clients understand the difference
in quality and order 7700 prints to sell at craft fairs for
$25-$30 and giclees to sell in galleries for $300-$1,500.
There is a market for everything and the 7700 is a good
tool to produce short run commercial color and low-end
art reproductions. It is not designed to take the place of a
chromalin or matchprint.
