Last week at Macworld/SF, I spoke with the Initio people, who claim they

have a SCSI>Firewire converter which should solve the problem. About $99 US.
With one of the software upgrades to my Precision 3, Imacon provided a
SCSI -> FireWire converter, but advised that if you aren't having
problems, stick with SCSI. My Imacon works fine on the 2930, with or
without the Lino in the mix, and I am wary of further complicating a very
complicated system with further patches.
Someone mentioned ATTO cards as being more compatible with OSX, but with
a brief visit to their site, I couldn't find anything that appeared to be
a simple SCSI card. Neither scanner needs any higher performance than
the 2906, so what product of ATTO's might fit the bill?
Review--------------
I have tried every combination of termination, scanner sequence or
individual connections, operating systems, and both a 2906 and 2930. The
result? Imacon always shows, no matter what. In OS9 they both show, no
matter what. In OSX the Lino doesn't show, no matter what. OSX has gone
through several upgrades since the 2906 was in the Mac, so there's
another option to try. ...or I could try an ATTO card. ...or just
replace the scanner.
End of Review------
But the thing that pisses me off is that the Lino's power supply went up
in smoke sometime during my transition to X, and I paid around $130 to
$140 to replace it. All my critical work is film scans, and all of this
is done on the Imacon. The Lino flatbed is almost always used for non-
critical work or for OCR input, so replacing the Lino with an equivalent
reflective scanner (1,000ppi) shouldn't be all that much money these
days, but even writing off the cost of repairing the Lino's power supply
and replacing the scanner, has its financial hit. According to
LaserSoft, I can't just move or upgrade my SilverFast to a new scanner,
I've got to purchase a whole new copy.
Well, I'm just crying in my beer, now. So if an ATTO is worth a try,
which one?
