Now here's an example of info gleaned from the Real World Color
Managment book! This is coming off of memory and involves my
interpretation, but I'm sure the authors will correct any inaccuracies.
Here's my take:
Using a smaller area of the screen puts the same number of photons into
a smaller space and effectively increases what the monitor is able to
output. Therefore you would in fact be able to increase the contrast
that way. Same thing happens, I think, when you lower the refresh rate,
etc. [See page 136.]
Recommendation-wise, I'd either go for a Sony Artisan or an
Apple/Eizo/Formac LCD, depending on the test results that come in from
Sweden. :)
Hope this helps...

My monitor (nearly 6 years old 24" Sony W900) is loosing it's
contrast.
I hadn't noticed by sight, but I am no longer able to adjust to the
ColorCal requirements at full resolution. However, if I set the
resolution to a lower value which only uses part of the screen, the
contrast jumps to normal values again. Which makes me wonder if the
contrast loss is due to the aging of the tube (my first guess) or any
other component
Wow six years is excellent, if you used it full time. Three is more
typical
for the guns in a CRT. Sounds like its time to bite the bullet, though
I'm
sure it costs more there to replace a monitor there than here, and I
certainly don't suggest it lightly.
