With the Apple 23" Cinema display in native HD (1920x1200) resolution
and a recent $1500 US price drop, I think both of your wishes have
started coming true. At that price it's close to the 24" Sony's, and
shipping will certainly be less expensive, if you can't find it
locally. And don't forget that the Cinema Display (with associated
profiling HW/SW as mentioned here recently) is the only soft proofing
solution to be SWOP certified, although I'm guessing that certification
doesn't hold quite as much weight across the pond as it does in the US.
But it does lend at least a little credibility to it being a
high-quality display. Complete and total lack of personal experience
notwithstanding, if it's in your budget and you have the hardware to
profile it, I wouldn't hesitate...
Given that, though, it's certainly no 9 Megapixel monster
(3840x2400/204dpi resolution with native 5000K/1.8 Gamma
http://www.torque.com/main/hardware/monitors/totoku.html#totoku9mp)
which is surely to be more-than-a-little outside of most mortals' price
range.
