EyeOne and software
EyeOne and software

I just got an EyeOne, and despite the fact that the device seems very
good I'm disappointed in the capabilities of the software available to
utilize it. I've used a Spectrocam for years, until I could no longer
afford to send it to Europe every time it became unstable for an out of
warranty repair. Now that I see what I can do with the EyeOne, I have to
say the Spectrocam's software was great, and it came out years ago. For
all it's complexity, Measure Tool falls far short of giving the
capability to the instrument it is capable of. The software that came
with the EyeOne itself is, shall we say, entry level. It's as though
it's thought no one will ever want to do anything but make profiles with
an instrument capable of so much more. I've brought this up on another
list so forgive the repetition, as well as outputting measurement text
files custom formatted, the Spectrocam would also do CMYK dot gain
strips, custom ink dot gain strips, both with however many steps you
want, and give percentage, as well as being able to give density
readings. I really need these functions. Other recent posts re Monaco
and Xrite have mentioned the need for more open software/hardware
combinations, and I think a gaping hole exists in the market for a good
app for the EyeOne, considering it now dominates it's marketplace. As a
matter of fact, it should just come with it. Enough of my rant.
So, looking over Bruce Lindbloom's excellent spreadsheets, I see that
all kinds of useful info can be calculated from the spectral data, most
of what I need and more. Unfortunately I can't get to the spectral data
from the EyeOne (argh!), but can I assume that since XYZ, LAB, and
density can all be derived from spectral, that there is a roundabout way
to get density from XYZ or LAB?
If so, can anyone point me to where I can find the math to do so?
Sorry for the length, and TIA.
Tyler
