Thanks guys for your comments on the issue of Epson Printer
Driftespecially in
regards to the media. That's the one variable I hadn't considered, although
in this case I'd tend to think that's not the culprit. We use Epson
Photo Paper
about 85% of the time which is usually bought in lots of about 3000
sheets. Any
comments on the weather Epson media or inks might exhibit greater
inconsisitancy?
Epson makes their own inks, and aside from one well-publicized lapse
when they shifted manufacture of the cyan dye-based inks from Japan
to Mexico, they tend to be pretty consistent. They don't manufacture
the paper, which comes from many different sources, so I wouldn't be
too hasty in ruling that out.
But the best thing to do is to take measurements when you change ink
batches, and take measurements when you change paper batches.
An off list responder also mentioned that checking for shifts specific to hue,
chroma and mid-tone densities might indicate a problem with one variable over
another. A hue shift being more associated with an ink problem, chroma with a
media issue and mid-tone densities more indicative of worn print heads. These
certainly sound plausable, however I'd need some steerage or on how best to
check for those specific deltas.
With a midtone shift, you'll see a bigger difference in L* than in a* or b*.
With a chroma shift, you'll see a fairly uniform increase or decrease
in both a* and b*
With a hue shift, you'll see a* and b* shift differently.
