A printer can't Match our Iris proofs.
The printer is using digital plating and has their curve shape very
light in the midtone. Since we're talking about a 6 figure job I'm a
little surprised that they didn't increase their midtone a bit but who
knows what goes on inside their company.
My proof is in line with just about any other printer. We are a trade
shop and do a lot of work for various printers and I get no complaints.
So here's what I decided to do.
I had this printer print the Monaco targets. I profiled from the press
sheet they gave me. In addition I had them print four of the catalog
pages at this setting.
Put the profile in Onyx Postershop and printed the sample pages.
Very impressive match to the press sheet.
Now I take the images and set photoshop to a cmyk working space with a
profile made from our Iris and do a "convert to profile" selecting the
profile I made from their press.
I proof these converted images with the quickset I made from their press
sheet and it's amazing. Near perfection.
With one variation. They use Toyo inks and the pinks in the product
still don't match. These colors are almost pure magenta so I'm not
surprised.
Now the printer is going to press proof the converted images at the same
settings they printed the profile targets at.
What do you think? Will it work?
I'm waiting anxiously.
For the next step I want the printer to switch to a Rhodamine red and
repeat the profiling test.
