Steve is right here, the key is getting good measurements. But as Dan
Caldwell pointed out, on ceramics you only get good measurements with a
spherical device. I was involved in the development of CerDeChrom and
have measured thousands of patches with a handheld Minolta CM508d -
very tedious. That4s why we had an xy-table for the X-Rite SP62
designed. With that you can automate your measurements (on flat tiles,
at least).
As far as the software is concerned, the CerDeChrom profiles were built
with ColorBlind Professional. But ColorBlind is dead, there is no
improvement or adaptation to new OS versions since more than 3 years
now. And Matchbox will not do the job, because you cannot influence the
black generation. basICColor print4c offers targets with more than 5000
patches and can be customized to even more. That helps to describe a
process which is as non-linear as ceramics.
And keep in mind, what Dan said:

first. With out repeatability don't waste your time.
