While the i1Match is definitely the main cause of the problem I still
feel after considerable testing that the light is too restricted to the
sensor on the colorimeter. Every test I do indicates that this device
loves light and plenty of it.
Fellow list subscriber Denis Gliksman in France sent me an i1Match fix
(many thanks) that had been sent to him from Gretag which reduced the
size of the full screen patches down to the other extreme, a small patch
in the centre of the display. There is no doubt that this has made a
dramatic difference to the calibration of the iMac I have been using for
testing, however the resulting profile was way too warm. Denis reported
the same finding to me. At least the resulting calibration appeared to
be even throughout the tonal range and had lost the cross cast resulting
in previous calibrations without the update. Profiling with the spectro
was neutral. On a new Mitsubishi monitor with adjustable guns the
calibration looked good but on close examination there was a distinct
magenta cast around the 200 RGB level and another around the 50 level.
Recalibrating with the i1 spectro resulted in a neutral greyscale.
Testing on an LCD resulted in a neutral greyscale with both colorimeter
and spectro, reinforcing my comment that this device loves light.

I guess this means that I do not suffer from delusions. I guess the fix

the way, do you calibrate TFT's?
I see your sense of humour is still alive and well. By TFTs I presume
you are referring to laptops. I do calibrate them when requested to but
make it clear to the client of the limitations due to the narrow viewing
angle. I calibrated an iBook with the i1 Display colorimeter but the fix
for i1Match didn't work with OS-X and I had to calibrate using the full
screen colour patches. The light output of the iBook was around 94 cd/m
and the resulting calibration was terrible as in really terrible. The
desktop LCD I calibrated had an output closer to 200cd/m and I have to
say the result looked great.
