About 4 - 5 months ago I contacted Epson Tech Support to inquire as
to whether the 2200/7600/9600 actually *used* 16 bit data or
whether the printer (or driver) converted to 8-bit. After some
"research," I was assured that they use 16 bit data and don't just
convert to 8-bit. I'm not so assured. Anyone know the truth
behind this?
Does it actually have a 16-bit input mode?
At some level, it almost surely uses 16-bit (or higher) precision. If
it only used 8-bit precision, the highlights would be grossly
posterized (and much too dark). The real question isn't whether, but
where along the line. I would suspect that it's in the linearization
code.
