It is a linear algebra concept related to matrix calculations. I'd suggest
you look it up in www.google.com. You'll get lots of hits.

A mapping is idempotent if applying it twice is exactly the same as
applying it once. A general mathematical attribute of some functions having
the same source (domain) and target (range) spaces, not limited to linear
algebra.
