John,
There is software that specifically addresses the issue of paint - and other
building materials, by providing both "custom colors" and a compilation of
numerous paint companies available colors.
Visit www.colorcharts.org, and look for colors that have been "digitally
certified" to the 3-star standard - this means the actual paint chips were
scanned using an X-Rite Spectrophotometer. These color chips may then be
loaded into a digital image that is prepared with CBN Selector (see
www.cbnsystem.com for free download). If the colors don't directly load
into CBN Selectors "Materials Area V1 or Industry Colors V2" they can still
be brought into the image using the "Pixel Picker V1 or Color Grabber V2).
CBN does also distribute Formulation software (www.yourcolors.com) that will
allow paint companies to create a paint formula for the specific color
identified by the CBN Code. However, not many paint companies have this
deployed, so once you have loaded the color into your image, and have a CBN
Code, you can search colorcharts.org by CBN Code and find existing standard
paint colors that are very close to your selection. Go to the identified
paint company, and get that color in paint (You may want to compare to the
paint chips first, to get an idea of how that "digital" color compares with
the "real world color.")
An alternative approach would avoid you having to prepare the image for
recoloring again. As follows - load your colored image in whatever program
you used to recolor it. Start CBN Selector. Use the "Pixel Picker V1 or
Color Grabber V2" and "grab" the desired color from your colored image -
that will give you a CBN code - which you can then use to search
colorcharts.org.
We have had a number of people use the visualization software, as well as
the formulation software with great results.
Hope is helpful
Todd Miller
