I didn't said that PostScript is PDF which of-course is not, but
for sure, PDF is based on PostScript. So if Quartz converts
everything to PDF even for printing, I guess that the
interpretation is very similar if not identical to what a
PostScript RIP would do.
That could be; I don't know enough about the details of PDF to know
how similar it is to Postscript (although Ghostscript can interpret
PDF).
Apart of that; Is true that Ghostscript is built in Panther or
at-least it has some kind of RIP built in?
I don't know if it's bundled in with Panther; it can be downloaded for
Jaguar (you can download it from the Gimp-Print site,
http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net).
