Chris,
There are a lot of options and opinions on what you are asking.
IMHO you first need to decide what kind of rip you are going to get before
purchasing a printer profiling package. The reason is based on the workflow
you are planning to use. For example if you choose ImagePrint and want to
profile it, then you are going to create RGB printer profiles. Then the
Eyeone Photo is a reasonable if not a good choice.
If you choose a rip that handles CMYK then you will want to create CMYK
printer profiles. Then you will need to consider a CMYK printer profilng
package.
As for rips, ImagePrint is billed as a rip for fine art and photography
though I have clients who use it for pre-press at times. Another Mac
Solution is Perfect Proof and it works for photography and pre-press. A
windows solution I like is the ColorBurst rip that works quite well for fine
art, photography and pre press. What I like about it is that it is easy and
color accurate and if you need to you can really dial in the color
calibration using profiling tools. You will find that the EFI rip is not a
good rip to profile so I don9t usually recommend it.
I would also recommend that before you purchase a printer profiling
application that you try to use a rip like ImagePrint or ColorBurst. Both of
these products have proven to give the end-user a positive out-of-the-box
experience. Their supplied printer profiles are quite good.
Then if you don9t like the quality of your prints then buy into a printer
profiling package.
Good Luck
Jim Rich
