The basic reasons are that:

something or paying big bucks.

Dear DuWayne,
There are better ways of handling the Roland printers and still achieve
excellent Pantone matching.
I do not like the Idea of hacking into other people intellectual property,
we are all working hard to solve problems in the industry and I think people
should respect that.
AbsoluteProof is a Pantone Licensed product that will recognize Pantone
colors from all Pantone licensed applications without any hassles. Our
system strips the color information out of the files and replaces with
correct values or your own custom values.
AbsoluteProof is a digital proofing software that can take separated files
from the imagesetter rip, (one bit or 8 bit) combines the information,
Pantone colors are processed to the best ability of the printer, by passing
the source profile.
With the Roland Hexachrome capable device you can, with the right
combination of media and ink, achieve up to 97% of Pantone colors. We have
been working with Pantone for the last 7 months on this project and I have
to say that the results speak for them self's. We also provide the only Ink
Jet Hexachrome in Hexachrome out ICC workflow for inkjet printers on the
market.
Even using a device like the Epson 7600 you will be able to match most
Pantone colors my guess is around 75-80%, the Ultrachrome inks lack in the
orange gamut but are very capable when it comes to most other colors. Of
course we have to exclude the metallic and the Florescent colors.
You can even simulate Hexachrome on an Epson Printer.
We have gone down a totally different track than Scanvec and Colorchoice
when it comes to controlling the inks on the Roland, we provide 6 channel
linearization and control over individual and total ink coverage.
Therefore you have all the controls needed to get precise colormatching out
of the Roland in combination with a Hexachrome profiling software like the
multicolor module from GretagMacbeth.
There has been criticism of variation between Pantone books, this problem
can be easily overcome by measuring the Lab values of your book and enter
the Lab values into the color library of AbsoluteProof. We have had
excellent results with the Pantone Color Queue in the past, other devices
can of course be used.
We have just released an Mac OSX version.
