For sure, the best approach is the concept of 'late binding' as Henrik would
call it; do the conversion at the last minute. That way, you keep your image
in device-independent RGB and you only generate what you need on-the-fly, in
the RIP, for your proofing. I am sure that has always be the fundamental
idea behind color management. For people who don't own full ICC
'color-managed' RIP there is no choice but to do the conversion on the host.
But for people who own true ICC color-managed RIP why bother doing the
conversion upstream (or is it downstream -- never remember which is which,
sorry?) *IF* the conversion at the RIP matches the conversion you know you
can achieve on the host?
For sure, if you are going to print from Photohop, then only match color in
the 'Print with Preview' dialog box. It does not make sens to
ConvertToProfile and send the document already matched in the device space
to the printer! That's a waste of time, it would seem? Mind you, I never
clocked the difference in speed of converting and printing 'as-is' as
opposed to printing and converting in the Print dialog box. I could be wrong
but I have a feeling the second method is faster. That's the method I always
use, anyway, personnally.
My two cents,
