One major benefit of a color managed workflow is the ability to
disconnect the source and destination profiles in your files. I
would suggest proofing with the output profile in Photoshop but
printing the RGB file to the Best and let the transformation happen
in the Rip. This prevents the need to keep two copies of the file
(assuming you always want to archive the RGB) in archive. If the Rip
is set up correctly it should give the identical results to
processing in Photoshop.
The above workflow is what I would love to follow. But I have
noticed with the RIP that use (not Best) I get different results than
when I convert in Photoshop. I do have my RIP set correctly and I
believe everything else is set correctly as well. Until your post, I
was assuming the differences I see have to do with different CMMs and
Black Point Compensations. Since RIPs have their own BPC
implementation and CMM I thought this made sense. The RIP I use (a
good RIP) with an Epson 9600 adds contrast in the 3/4 tones and ads
saturation overall. It is just significant enough for me to feel
better about doing my conversions in PhotoShop.
So now I am wondering, Are people actually finding what Dan says to
be true, "If the Rip is set up correctly it should give the
identical results to processing in Photoshop". If this is true for
you, could you please tell me what RIP you are using?
Thank you,
Joseph
