Conversion to Lab, shAf, but from 'what' space? It brings us back to the
original poster question, namely which global profiles to assign for all
images in the collection -- if such think was indeed possible.
Personnally, in this situation, I would advocate not to convert any image.
But I would have to decide on which best profile to tag each image with.
This is similar to an "output-referred" colorimetry. It isn't going to be
easy to decide which output-referred profile to assign each image. Ideally,
they would want to have some kind of print corresponding to each image they
have in their collection and, with the help of a good calibrated monitor,
decide on the best profile to assign each image based on the appearance of
the printed images against the screen images.
It is going mean a lot of compromises but that would preserve the integrity
of each image. And it is going to force some critical questions to the
surface and the making of some tough reproduction policies.
