profiles
in the Display folder in my ColorSync folder (System 9). Since I have two
monitors there are a total of four profiles in there.

Two are profiles created at boot time by the display manager based on EDID info returned by the displays, the other two are aliases. The aliases always stay there, but can point to different profiles depending on which profile you've chosen to associate with your display in the Displays control panel.
