A quick question:
One of the options in Nikon software is to output images in the
AdobeRGB 1998 color space. Interestingly, the Nikon software inserts
its own "branded" AdobeRGB profile (called Nikon Adobe RGB 4.0.0.3000).
The Nikon Adobe 1998 (aka NKAdobe.icm) and bone fide Adobe1998 icm
files are very similar, but they are not exactly the same. Nikon, for
some inexplicable reason (at least to me), left out the "Media
black-point tristimulus" setting, which should be 0,0,0. Everything
else is essentially identical to the bone fide Adobe file.
Many Nikon photographers have reported reluctance on the part of end
users/purchasers to accept anything other than a "standard" Adobe1998
embedded profile, and they therefore replace the embedded profile with
the Adobe profile (a chore).
Instead of modifying the Nikon file to have the correct non-Nikon, pure
Adobe name inside (but with incomplete
media settings), I renamed a copy of the real Adobe1998 file to Nikon's
name (NKAdobe.icm). It appears to work fine, as Nikon's software seems
to be just looking for a file with the correct name. Rather than an
undefined Media Black Point setting, it's now defined as 0,0,0, as I
assume it should be. I would not want to embed a profile using the name
Adobe1998 if it was not *exactly* the same as Adobe1998. Nikon's is
close, but not perfect.
Is anyone aware of any down side to this? Am I making any errors in
logic? What about the implications of Nikon leaving off the media black
point tristimulus in the Nikon profile? Do CMMs assume values of 0,0,0
if the tag is not present?
Enlightenment appreciated.
Thanks,
