Just took a look at them. What I'm evaluating is overall smoothness (lack of
banding/"rainbowing") as opposed to color matching/soft proofing.
The technique I'm using was first mentioned by either Mr. Hutcheson or the
boyz in Real World Color or Something (can't remember which). The method
goes something like this:
1) Open a RGB gray ramp in PS (I use Don's Lab ramps converted to RGB).
2) Assign your current monitor profile to the image (check PS's color
Settings for the Monitor RGB profile that's currently in use just to be
sure).
3) Inspect the image for whatever you want. I primarily look at shadow
clipping (take eyedropper and look for first discernable step in shadow end
of ramp and note the RGB values at that step) and I also look for
banding/posterization/"rainbow" artifacts.
4) Change your monitor profile in the Displays System Prefs/Monitors Control
Panel to the other profile you want to evaluate. Check PS color settings to
make sure that the new monitor profile is in effect.
5) Repeat steps 2-3 by assigning the new monitor profile to the image.
In my tests using new monitor profiles created in PM 4.1.5, I don't see any
shadow clipping with either the Large (LUT) or Default (matrix) profile
sizes. As a side note, the LUT profiles USED to show pretty severe shadow
clipping but they've apparently fixed this. HOWEVER I still see more
posterization/banding artifacts with the LUT profile vs. the matrix profile.
I have no idea which profile has the more accurate soft proof but I'll stick
with the Default/matrix-based profiles in PM 4.1.5 for now.
FYI, I checked these on my LaCie22blue calibrated for a 6000K color temp @
90 candles per hour(!) luminosity.
Now please leave me alone while I play with my new Sigma SD-9 and TRY to get
some work done. :-)
Cheers,
Terry
