HELP! Im frustrated with my options for outputting large-format inkjet prints via local
service bureaus. There are not many who offer 60" wide output and those Ive found
insist that I supply my files pre-converted to CMYK. My RGB images print beautifully on
a profiled six-ink desktop Epson printer. But as soon as I convert to CMYK I kiss
goodbye all my great blues and other colors are affected as well!
Heres my thinking on the matter:
Photoshops default CMYK conversion is based on SWOP CMYK color characteristics.
Unless I have a profile for the inkjet printer in question then Im doomed to loose half my
blues as these do not exist in a SWOP CMYK ink colorspace. I believe the inks on the
printer (an six-ink HP5000 in this case) ARE capable of reproducing more colors than
SWOP CMYK ... but Ill never know once my file has been pre-clipped by a SWOP
CMYK conversion. Sending the file to the printer in RGB should therefore yield more
colors. Better still, one would profile the printer to map the RGB values to their closest
match.
Is this wrong?
OR: does a 6 ink HP5000 indeed resemble SWOP cmyk colors so there would be no
difference in sending an RGB file via an appropriate printer profile?
Thanks for any help.
