In adddition to other suggestions you have seen I would add that it is
imperative you set the printer into as linear and gray-neutral state as
possible before profiling. If you are using the Epson driver this would be
PhotoRealistic with any expanded gamut color options (epson natural color?)
turned off. It is also important to experiment with all the media settings.
You can also use Epson's Gray Balancer which is extremely tedious but can be
used to put the printer in an almost perfect neutral state all by itself.
This application will add to or change the Epson Driver's LUTs, don't know
which but it works.
You say desktop printer so could be other than an Epson. I have read that
the new Canon printers a startlingly good right out of the box. Printers are
cheap these days... might be better than sitting down to measure 1000 plus
patches by hand.
