The one and only connection space definition came into being through
ColorSync 2.0 and the ICC Specification. There is no custom connection
space for GretagMacbeth -:).
For a conversion to take place, you have to have data in a data space
and you have to have a source profile that gets the data into the
connection space. This is also true when data space and connection
space are identical.
There are two ways to implement this. (1) Have the source D50 profile
implicit in the application, or (2) have the source D50 profile as a
loose profile on disk. The second solution leaves scope for labelling
profiles which are functionally identical in ways which are
terminologically different.
To take iQueue as an example: If you take the Lab profile that ships
with iQueue it references the same connection space as everybody else
references. If you were converting Lab D65 data an Lab D65 to Lab D50
color space conversion profile would be used. Application software
which offers a choice between its own color engine and the engine in
the operating system also offers user interface options to manage the
difference between internal and loose implementation. When you use the
internal iQueue color engine, the implicit Lab D50 profile is used.
When you use an external color engine, then a source Lab D50 profile
needs to be assigned manually. It doesn't matter whether it is the
Generic Lab Profile or the Lab D50 Profile.
