Thanks all.
For sure, the Red Coca-Cola color lives outside of any PANTONE
specifications. The "reddest" color PANTONE has is either PMS 185 or PMS
485. And those two look orange in comparison to the Coca-Cola red.
I have no idea whether a Lab specification of that colors exist. I am sure
it does, somewhere, but who has it: beats me! Perhaps it exist in spectral
form. But, then again, who has it? Ink manufacturers, possibly? But if a Sun
chemicals has it in spectral form they are not going to give it out to the
world. You would think that they'd be under some kind of legal agreement
with Coke not to do so. And if ever you contact Coke about it, I'd surprise
someone over there gives it out to you directly in colorimetric form.
Although I could be surprised? One the one hand, you'd think that this red
is some kind of well-kept commercial secret but on the other hand, you'd
think that it is in Coke's best interest that it gets reproduced as
acurately as possible.
So, if I were you, Mike, I'd measure up a few samples of that red with a
spectrophometer and use that in my color reproduction. I remember reading a
few years ago, in a packaging magazine, that, with the aid of color
management techniques, the Coke print buyers had managed to reduce the color
appearances of their red down from 20,0000 to 2000 variations only! I don't
know where they are at today. Perhaps you should try to contact them? Worth
trying after all. And, please let me know what you find.
My two cents,
