"As I understand it, PhotoDesk uses built in definitions of various camera
models known performance characteristics to process the files into whatever
working space you chose. This is not unlike the way Adobe Camera Raw
works. A profile is not simply being assigned. Process into Adobe RGB and
you get a very different file than if you chose to process the same raw
file into sRGB. They will look very much the same, but the RGB numbers
will be quite different."
Hi Bob:
Thanks for your response. Here's my problem, based on your information...
I've built an input profile with ColorEyes 20/20. ColorEyes docs say to
use the camera manufacturer's proprietary software to linearize and gray
balance the source file to a repeatable standard (e.g. gray card), save
into AdobeRGB workspace, and build the input profile from that target file
(Derrick has indicated that other workspaces can be used). If PhotoDesk is
converting into AdobeRGB (rather than just assigning the profile), then the
input profile is "AdobeRGB dependent", meaning that I must always be in the
AdobeRGB workspace to use that profile.
I envisioned my input workflow as: raw file from camera to PhotoDesk,
linearize and gray balance from standard gray card with PhotoDesk, save
file...assigning ColorEyes input profile, convert to chosen workspace (not
necessarily AdobeRGB). Does this seem like a reasonable workflow?
If PhotoDesk would only assign the workspace profile, then I could scrape
it of and assign my ColorEyes profile after the fact, and proceed from
there. Otherwise, I thought I might just save my corrected file into my
ColorEyes profile space, and proceed from there. However, my input
profiles do not seem to show up on the PhotoDesk drop-down list of
available destination spaces amidst the other available destination
spaces. Does PhotoDesk require a "two-way" profile for it's destination space?
I have considered profiling from raw files and going straight to iQueue,
circumventing PhotoDesk altogether. However, I have not been able create
usable profiles, and discussions with others have indicated that the
success of the CMM to make corrections based on a profile is inversely
proportional to the magnitude of those corrections.
Any ideas would be appreciated. How have others dealt with this
situation? I am anxious to whack my data as few times as possible.
Jim
