Still feeling disgusted after reading from Dr Nicholas Hellmuth on his
website that all the 22 they had bought have self-destruct after only
one year! Can anybody confirm this?
I am a neophyte with color management and I read this list because of
the august opinions from the best experts in the field. I am responding
to Paul Schilligers query about Cinema Displays because we have some
history with them.
We put 35 units into service in the Spring of 2000. Since that time we
have upgraded every workstation and now have 140 22 Cinema Displays. Of
all the monitors we purchased, we have noticed a slight dark
discoloration at the corners on two of the earliest units occurring over
the years. Serious problems have shown up usually right after
installation. However we have had to return no more than three units for
replacement.
The benefits to a teaching and learning are many. The labs now seem to
breathe with the extra space we gained on the desktops. The images are
very brilliant, crisp and seductive--attracting and encouraging long
hours of student use. They are also very consistent; when the same image
is distributed to an entire classroom, they are very close in general
color appearance. The image is observable from a wide angle (160 degrees
or more) but for accurate color fidelity, the view should be fairly
direct; there tends to be a slight color shift when viewed off center.
I am not sure why Dr. Hellmuths panels have displayed a deterioration,
but we cannot confirm that here, and I believe we have one of the
largest installed Cinema Display facilities in the country.
Others on this list will confirm the color accuracy potential of these
flat panels (I believe they were evaluated second after Eizo recently).
But I do have one question about these panels: when the color sync
profile of the monitor is identified, and the profile information is
checked with Get info, the date of the profile is todays or
yesterdays date. Do these monitors self calibrate each time they are
turned on?
