For the prints shown at SFDIG, we were using the PerfectProof Proofmaster
RIP on an Epson 2200. It was NOT a painless process putting it together,
however. We schedule a day to install Proofmaster and do not charge extra
if it takes longer due to technical glitches.
I'd also like to respond to the posting about "Best or Onyx?". I second Jim
Rich's comments. A good RIP should be not only about wonderful technology
but also ease of use. I haven't found any yet that meet my definition of
easy to use.
One war story about the Best RIP and an RGB workflow - about a year ago we
were hired to put in a RIP for a high end photographer who prints his
portfolio to an Epson 10000 out of Quark. We recommended and installed the
Best RIP only to find halfway through the install that it didn't support
Quark RGB files. This was news to the Best tech support team, as we were
apparently the first people to attempt this. Hopefully, they've fixed this
in the meantime.
The client then insisted we put in a Fiery (ugh!). He would now like to
replace the Fiery, and we're trying to decide whether to recommend Colorbyte
or Ergosoft. They still have an RGB workflow but are now mostly printing
out of InDesign. I've heard Andrew's enthusiastic endorsement of Colorbyte.
Anyone else have something to add?
Thanks,
--Clark
