If you do not do the calibration procedure, prior to profiling, you
have no way of returning
the printer to a baseline. After a toner change or a major humidity change
it is possible for these toner based printers to shift / lose their
gray balance.
Or you could re-profile every time it changes. . .

I realize that, but the inherent problem with Phasermatch is that you
cannot use a profile you created with a spectro. You have to use
their procedure which involves scanning the target in order to create
a proprietary file that the Phasermatch will accept. The success of
this is limited to the scanner's accuracy.

Glenn, the newest release of PhaserMatch does allow you to create a
custom profile, using a spectro. In the past you were not able to
load a custom profile, PhaserMatch would not see any profiles created
outside of the scanner based (Monaco) system supplied. But I have
successfully profiles three Phaser 7700's to match various press
conditions: one Flexo and two sheetfed. The quality is not as clean
as an inkjet, but that is the best the toners can do. I was very
satisfied with the results, considering the cost per page and the
speed.
The final output did require 4-5 tweaks in the edit portion of
PhaserMatch to fine tune the gray balance and to lighten a bit.
