Dear Bruce
I realize that the main thrust of the discussion concerns the larger
machines for use as contract proofers, however my present interest
is with a replacement for our Epson 5000. Having been impressed
with what I have seen out of the Canon 2200 I am a little surprised
by your assertion that the Canon dyes were still changing after a
week!
As Andrew pointed out, humidity may be a factor, but I was still
measuring shifts of around 2-3 deltaE at the end of a week, at which
point I was sufficiently discouraged to bail on the whole enterprise.
They weren't what I'd call visually significant, but I know from
experience that small changes can easily get amplified by a profile,
and I couldn't answer the question "when should I measure the target
to build a profile."
I found the test print I measured daily showed very little change
but I have no way of knowing how old the print was when posted to
me. A further point which has bothered me is the suggestion that
the black is insufficiently dense for contract proofing work. Would
you or anyone here like to comment please regarding the density
issue?
I didn't really look at that. I did note that one of the changes I
saw was a progressive decrease in density over time, though. My
personal feeling is that using any dye-based inkset for proofing is
something of a crapshoot...
