When you select an intent, Photoshop and other apps use rel col for the device->PCS transform and then your chosen intent for the PCS->device transform.

Actually, if the source profile is two-way and supports multiple rendering intents, Photoshop uses the chosen rendering intent for both sides of the conversion -- it started doing that in Photoshop 6. If the source profile is one-way and supports multiple rendering intents, Photoshop 7 uses the chosen rendering intent for both sides of the conversion, where Photoshop 6 always used relcol.

The ICC changed the spec to allow multiple intents for scanner (i.e. one-way) profiles after Photoshop 6 shipped and before Photoshop 7 shipped. We support this new feature in Photoshop 7.

If the source profile is two-way, multiple intents where always supported. The change is only for one-way input profiles.

So there you have it from the horse's mouth, so to speak.
