There are a number of methods of dealing with black in RGB. The method where
you are going between modes might make some squeamish because of losing
potential image data in a mode change.
So one alternative is to take your RGB image and convert it to CMYK.
Then go to the black channel. Select All and copy it to the clipboard.
Then revert the file back to RGB.
Then create an new channel.
Use the Paste option so the black channel in the clipboard is pasted into
new channel. You will want to soften the edges of the channel based on the
types of correction you want to make.
Use the the new channel to create a selection with color tools to adjust the
black tones in the image.
You can adjust the Color Settings before converting to CMYK to change the
shape of your potential mask of the black channel.
Milage will vary.
