"We found it (basICColorSQUID) to be an excellent instrument - for a
colorimeter. But the Eye-One Monitor, being a full blown spectro, is
still the superior instrument. This will be visible, when trying to
match monitors of different types and makes. "
This appears to be a commonly held view and one where I feel
colorimeters get an unfair reputation. It is true I believe that if one
was looking for the most accurate measurement of any particular colour
then a selection of spectros should be more accurate and consistent than
a collection of colorimeters. This is due in no small part to the fact
that precise colour filters are required in a colorimeter and there is
latitude in manufacture of these filters and the same to some degree
must be said for sensors. However when matching different monitors to
each other with the same colorimeter the match should be as good as with
any device. In other words a colorimeter may not be as good at measuring
absolute colour as a spectro but they are extremely good at measuring
differences. Much the same can be said of the human eye. Even if they
read a colour with some degree of error, that error for that colour will
always be consistent.
