This appears to be a commonly held view and one where I feel
colorimeters get an unfair reputation.

I've found that the EyeOne Display colorimeter measures the black level much more accurately than the older EyeOne Monitor spectro specifically, and that colorimeters in general do a better job of measuring monitor black levels than any affordable spectrophotometer.
