There's three or four monitors which are consistently well recommended. You should be able to do well with an LCD, although I'd recommend searching the archives for more detail as this has been discussed in the recent past:

LCDs:
Eizo 985EX (Finally available in the US)

Eizo is just to release a new version of this monitor, called ColorEdge. They have included a calibrator (the EyeOne spectrophotometer) together with new software, which makes this combo self-calibrating. For those who have tried to press the right buttons on the L685 and the L985, this is wonderful news :-)
