Photoshop Formalities

I have a Photoshop question for the list.

There are 2 ways to convert an image from one color
space to another.

1) Set up the color settings menu with the proper
settings. Pull down the Mode menu to required space.
The color settings dictate the conversion profiles.

2) Pull down to the Profile to Profile or Convert to
profile under the mode change menu. You then select
the proper to and from profiles and convert with.

I have been under the impression that these
procedures render exactly the same results. I have
heard from others that there is a reason to use the
Profile to Profile method (Number 2). Has anyone on
this list compared the results of these two methods? If
so, are there any differences in the resulting files?

Thanks in advance for any information made available.

Sam Landry
