Hello.
I often set up new Macs with new 21" displays. One of the first
things I check is the uniformity of color across the screen. After
calibration I throw up a solid gray screen and evaluate uniformity.
If I see problems I will evaluate uniformity with 100% Red, Green,
Blue, Yellow and other colors. When they gray looks not so good the
100% red will always look much worse.
About a year ago I had a client buy three 22" Mitsubishi Diamondtrons
and they had terrible gray uniformity. The red was worse. I exchanged
them 3 times before giving up and getting Sony GDM F-520s, which were
great. I also spent much time in the phone with Mitsibushi tech
support. That was fun!
I ruled out host, power and environmental problems by connecting them
to Windows boxes at a different location. No change in appearance.
Getting a good display of my own 2 years ago was a soap opera too. I
bought (I think) a Sony GDM F-500. It arrived soaking wet and
damaged. The replacement had terrible uniformity and sharpness. That
was the moment when Sony discontinued them and replaced them with the
GDM F-520. After a considerable wait the first one of those was
unacceptable and the second was fair but not great. By that time I
needed a darn display and kept it. A few months later I did return it
to Sony and it was returned with a note attached saying it was up to
specifications, but they did adjust it anyway. It was much improved
and is still in excellent condition.
Today I hooked up a brand new LaCie 22" Electron Blue with poor gray
uniformity and terrible 100% red uniformity...
Is it out of line to expect decent uniformity out of a professional
grade CRT? How is one to acquire a good display? No local dealers
carry the kind of display we need for professional color work so mail
order is the only option, without driving several hours to a large
city. Maybe it is worth the drive!
Slightly off topic rant here, but I am glad I don't sell any hardware
because the number of brand new CPUs and peripherals that arrive DOA
- or go bad soon after seems to have increased markedly lately! On my
suggestion a client bought an Artisan a couple of months ago. It
shipped with the wrong video cable. The tech support phone number
included in the box was incorrect. Nobody at the number knew what an
Artisan was or could direct us to anyone who did. Thanks to help from
Andrew Rodney that situation was corrected promptly. Thanks again
Andrew!
