About a year ago I had a client buy three 22" Mitsubishi Diamondtrons
and they had terrible gray uniformity. The red was worse. I exchanged
them 3 times before giving up and getting Sony GDM F-520s, which were
great. I also spent much time in the phone with Mitsibushi tech
support. That was fun!
Ah, that reminds me of when I bought a 21" screen many years ago and had
to go though about 7-8 before getting a decent one. Had the wretched
things pilled up all around waiting to go back to suppliers! In
desperation I went back to one which was so awful as regards out of
focus that it was only on for a short time before being cast aside...got
it back out and switched it on and it seemed not too bad. During the
day it improved and as the days went past the improvement continued and
it finally turned out to be a fantastic screen. Another thing
learnt....like Hi-Fi gear, monitors can improve over time, but only if
they have the potential! The name on the case...D2. This was as some
might remember the name LaCie used some years ago.
Personally I find the purchase of a monitor a stressful operation as I
want something that's equivalent to the evenness of a perfect lightbox,
and that's hard to get. When your work depends to a great extent on the
image you see on the screen, it pays to get a good one whatever the
effort involved. I favour the top of the range Sony screens as they
allow more user adjustment and unlike the LaCie's and Mitsubishi's
continue to off BNC connections for the video cable which I find give a
slightly cleaner picture.
How much better the Artisans are than a top of the range Sony with first
rate calibration I have no idea. The task of calibrating I find easy,
so the automated running of this on the Artisans have no real appeal to
me...thoughts anyone?
Cheers
Richard
