I have had a Sony Colour Reference System (the European name for the
Artisan) on test for a couple of weeks would just like to reiterate what
many of the US members of this list have said. I can honestly say I have not
worked with a better monitor.
I used to work for the UK distributor of Barco and find the Sony more
accurate, more consistent across the screen, gives a better and sharper
image, has a modern flat tube, is far easier to use and has much better
contrast. I have also worked with third party solutions for many years and
find that even the best of them do not compare with the CRS, not because of
the quality of the measurement instruments or the software but due to the
quality of the monitors they have to work with.
Of course third party solutions for monitor calibration are cheaper and do
provide results that are good enough for many users. The CRS wont fit
everybody's budget (UK pricing is #1699 ex VAT) but it will suit those who
need a device in their workflow that they can absolutely trust. Just think
about the cost of one rejected print run, a couple of batches of rescans or
a few hours of retouching of digital images and the return on investment
becomes clear.
