Last night I started wondering whether this might be a driver problem. I shall try and do some tests this afternoon.

I've been doing assorted tests with Panther and my new Canon i960 with the canned profiles. I'm puzzled by the results. I'll renew a previous unanswered question: is there any way to audit what is happening in the print system? I can pluck spooled PDFs out of the print system and examine them, which has shed light on how/why some applications are broken, but I'd really like to get an audit of what happens to the data after it is spooled.

At this point the best results are coming from Apple's bundled Preview, TextEdit and iPhoto with the driver set to ColorSync color management.

Results are okay, but neither the same, nor as good having photoshop do the conversion and setting the driver to no color management. It seems like the results should be the same. I set photoshop to use Apple's CMM for the conversion and use Perceptual rendering with no black point compensation which is what I assume is happening when the print system does the conversion.

Having photoshop print same as source and leaving the conversion up to the print system and driver gives bad results. Assorted other allegedly colorsync enabled applications do worse. At the bottom of the heap is Cannon's bundled printing application which gives astonishingly terrible results.

I tried the latter because Canon tech support said that the "ColorSync" option was not officially supported and they would only address issues if their own software didn't work. I think I can write off Canon support as totally useless.

So at this point I'm using Preview.app for printing, but wishing I could easily control the rendering intent...I hacked one of the Canon profiles to change the default but haven't yet tried to convince the system to use that profile instead.
