Thanks for your input. It's comforting to know someone has accomplished
identical results in OSX and OS9.
One of the printers I use also is a 1270, which I am hoping also can be
used in OSX.
However, I'm stumped for what to try next, since I only installed the
drivers once, so there was no residue...
I am using the same profiles and same paper and same files.
I am printing out of Photoshop, is it possible that interaction with
screen calibration and profile can produce different results ?
OS9 is on a different machine than the OSX -
all monitors (2 LCD 1 CRT) were calibrated with basICColor Squid and
look great, virtually the same.

when you install a new Epson driver, you have to manually remove all
trace of the old one first, otherwise you get problems like the ones
